Of Heart And Hand | Waterstone Gallery
March 6 - March 31, 2024
This March, Waterstone is excited to welcome figurative painter Ruth Hunter to the gallery. ‘Of Heart And Hand’ is an exhibition of Ruth’s newest works. Employing her skills of combining color and mark making, she depicts an emotionally charged response to the Pacific Northwest. Under surfaces that are heavily worked, there is a narrative that evokes human connection. Ruth paints in a style that is rooted in 20th Century Modernism and compares favorably to the Bay Area Figurative painters of the 1960’s. Ruth Hunter has been a working artist for more than three decades. Having grown up in the rolling prairie lands of East Texas, she formed a deep connection to her natural surroundings there. As an adult, Ruth’s career took hold with galleries on the Southern Atlantic with a studio in Savannah, Georgia. In 2017, she relocated to the Pacific Northwest as a refugee from one too many hurricanes. OPENING RECEPTION First Thursday - March 7, 2024 ARTIST TALKSunday - March 24, 2024 Waterstone Gallery 124 NW 9th Ave Portland, Oregon 97209 503-226-6196 Gallery Hours: Wed - Sat 11-5:30pm & Sun 11-4pm ARTIST SHOW STATEMENT I like to quote from the book of The Unknown Craftsman: “Every artist knows he is engaged in an encounter with infinity. Work done with heart and hand is worship of life itself”. With this there is a question that must be asked. What is it that I really need from this work? As an artist, I only really need three things.
To know love.. To give life to expression.. And to be free to pursue both of these things. URBAN ART & ANTIQUES REVIEW OF PORTLAND ART OPENINGS - MARCH 2024
